Diffusion Bonding of Al7075 to Ti-6Al-4V by Spark Plasma Sintering and Using a Copper Interlayer

Sheets of aluminum 7075 and titanium Ti-6Al-4V alloys were successfully joined using the spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. A copper foil was placed as an interlayer between two surfaces. The bonding made at 480 °C, 500 520 °C with a holding time 10 min under uniaxial pressure 5 MPa MPa. obtained bonds analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), wavelength (WDS). It found that diffused away through Al7075 formed Al2Cu intermetallics but not present joint region. investigation fractured surfaces X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed region contained TiAl3, TiAl2, Ti3Al intermetallic compounds. presence Cu believed to hinder formation Al3Ti observed in previous studies allowing more Ti diffuse into Al side.
